How’s the latest Star Wars series on Disney Plus?
Is Skeleton Crew skeletal or a cruise?
The newest Star Wars series on Disney Plus just released its season finale on 15 January. I’ve watched all the Stars Wars series except Andor and I have to say, Skeleton Crew is probably one of my favourites!
The series follows a group of four kids who’ve only known their planet At Attin their whole lives. We follow Wim, who craves adventure and a life more exciting than his mundane life going to school and going home every day (wait does that sound familiar, sounds like my lif- nevermind!).
While the plot was a pretty fun romp, it was the performance of Jude Law as Jod Na Nawood that really stood out. One moment he made us think of him a certain way, and the next moment he’s a completely different person. You never really know what his true intentions are, and that’s what makes his character interesting.
I enjoyed the story as well, it didn’t feel like your typical Star Wars good guys vs bad guys plot. While the plot wasn’t that complex, there was a sense of fun and adventure as I wasn’t sure what was going to happen next. Perhaps it's because the story is told from the kids' point of view - something refreshing for a change. And maybe that’s what made it enjoyable for me - the lightness of the story and the adventure.
Star Wars stories aren’t Star Wars without the droids, and the droid in this show - SM-33 - does steal the scenes he’s in. I enjoyed when he appeared in scenes, and his amusing dialogue and interactions with those around him. If you think his voice sounds familiar, it’s because he’s voiced by English actor Nick Frost.
Some of the episodes do feel like filler episodes, with minimal plot development, but I suppose those focus more on the character development. Both in terms of showing them growing individually as well as in their relationships with each other.
Skeleton Crew or Obi-Wan Kenobi?
Never thought I’d say this, but I do admit I enjoyed this show more than the Ahsoka and Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney Plus. But, it still can’t beat The Mandalorian Season 1 and even The Bad Batch. Plus, Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy is a hidden gem that most people haven’t heard of - that’s still a much more fun watch!
Semi-spoilers ahead!
One thing I didn’t really like from Skeleton Crew was the ending in the last episode. I just felt that the ending was so abrupt and too hasty. There was plenty of action and story development throughout the season and in the finale. But after the conclusion of events, the show just ended!
There could have been a few scenes showing the characters continuing with their lives after the drastic events that occurred, and perhaps how they have to adapt to these new developments.
Full spoilers ahead!

Final warning!
No reason to be down here in the article if you don’t want spoilers!
The ending could have been fleshed out a bit further, especially when the New Republic X-wings came to rescue the citizens of At Attin from the pirates. There are a lot of interesting themes to explore here. They might do that in a Season 2 if there is going to be one (still nothing announced at this point).
One big narrative is the idea that the New Republic are the good guys. Sure, they are in this case when they’re rescuing the citizens of At Attin from the pirates who are destroying their planet. But when the dust settles, it’s very likely that the New Republic will be taking over the planet and running it their way.
In case you haven’t watched the series, At Attin is a planet which houses a very active Old Republic mint - meaning whoever is in control can basically produce as much credits as they want.
If the pirates had taken over the planet, they would likely have used the mint to produce credits for themselves to enjoy. If the New Republic takes over, it would very likely use the credits for their own purposes. Over time, the New Republic might become the bad guys if they go down a certain authoritarian or abusive path. Either way, it seems like the citizens of At Attin don’t get to benefit from the Great Work that they are doing.
End of the heavy spoilers
These are just some of my thoughts on the Disney Plus series Skeleton Crew. What about you? Have you watched it or are planning to? If you have, did you enjoy it or hate it?
